Chapter 14
The next morning
"Ohayo [Morning]," I greeted as I walked down the stairs.
"Ohayo, Erika-chan," Junno greeted.
"What's for breakfast?" I sat down next to Kame and Jin, but didn't realize the awkward atmosphere until Junno didn't answer me for a while. "Eh? Nani [What]?" I asked confused. Then I looked at Kame and Jin who were staring at me. One with apologetic eyes and the other with mad, cold eyes. Guess who's who.
"Gomen [Sorry]," Kame apologized bowing his head.
"Nani ga [For what]?" I asked.
"You got hurt, right? I heard it didn't take until a while for you to wake up."
"Oh, iie. Sono koto nai yo [There's no such thing]."
"Yokata [I'm glad to hear that]."
"No one would be worried if she hadn't gotten in our way in the first place," Jin mummbled to himself.
"Jin," Maru scolded.
"Nani? Sou dayo, ne [What? It's true, right]?"
"Gomen," I forced myself to apologized. "I just ran in the middle on impulse."
"Tck. Next time don't get in the way," he told me and stood up. "Thanks for the food." He left the kitchen and went upstairs, probably to his room.
"Gomen," Junno said embarrassed.
"Iie. Nanka wakaru [It's okay. I sort of understand him]," I lied. I looked at the stairs with a mad face. What an ass.
"Oh yeah," Koki suddenly bursted out.
"What?" Ueda asked.
"Erika-chan, you got a call," he answered.
"A call? From who?" I asked. No one knows I'm in Japan. Plus, even if someone did know it's not like I gave them the phone number to this house.
"Ninomiya-san," he told me.
"Ninomiya-san? Nande [Why]?"
"He says he wants to take you on a date."
"A date?" I said completely confused.
"Ooo~" everyone in the room except for me, Koki, and Kame said playfully.
"He said something about not being able to play video games with you. Said he wanted to make it up today," Koki explained.
"Oh, that," I said relieved. "We were supposed to play Mario Kart yesterday at the party, but then..." I sort of looked at Kame, and he looked away.
"What time is he picking her up?" Junno asked.
"Didn't say. Said it'd be a surprise?" Koki said unsure.
"Scary," Ueda commented.
"So what should I do? Is there anything you guys are doing that I was invited to go to?" I asked.
"Well, we have another rehearsal, but you don't have to come. We're just practicing the stunts and stuff," Maru answered.
"Sou ka [I see]." I got up and bowed. "Thanks for the food. I guess I'll just get ready now."
"Okay~" Koki said with his thumb in the air.
"Jaa ne," I said as I went upstairs.
"Jaa~" everyone replied.
"Moshi moshi?" I heard Jin say in his room. His door was slightly open, and I could see him sitting on the bed talking on the phone. I stepped back a little, afraid that I was disturbing him. Wouldn't want to get Mr. Rude mad. "Awakai-chan?"
Awakai-chan?
Flashback
"What about Awakai-chan?" Yamapi asked seriously.
"I've already forgotten about her. Don't bring it up," Jin threatened.
Real time
That girl Yamapi was talking about last night? I stepped back a little more, to secure my safety. "Nani [What]?" Jin asked casually. There was a pause. "Ima [Now]?" he asked. Another pause. "Doko [Where]?" And then a long pause. "Wakata [I understand]. I'll be there soon. Jaa." I heard him close the phone and then his footsteps got louder. Yabai [Oh crap]! I tried to run down the stairs, but Jin already saw me. "What are you doing in front of my room?" he asked coldly.
I turned around nervously. "I was about to go to my room," I told him.
"Whatever." He walked pass me and then down the stairs. "I'm going out for a bit. I'll be back," he told the other members.
"Hai~ Be back before the rehearsal," Koki reminded.
"I know," Jin replied and left the house.
Probably going to meet that Awakai girl. Oh well, not my problem. I walked into my room and got ready for my "date" with Nino.
A few moments later
Ding. Dong.
"Hai?" I heard Ueda call as he answered the door. "Ah, Ninomiya-san. Dozo [Come in]."
"Arigatou [Thanks]," Nino replied.
I ran down the stairs with my DS case in my hand. "Konnichiwa [Good afternoon]," I greeted.
"Konnichiwa," Nino replied.
"Ikou [Let's go]?"
"Hai."
"Ittikimasu [I'm going]," I told everyone in the house.
"Ittirashai [Take care]," they responded.
"Ikou." And with that Nino and I left the house. Like a celebrity, he was wearing his hat and sunglasses. And like a normal person, I was wearing a shirt and some jeans. "So, where are we going?" I asked.
"To a small cafe. No one goes there, so no worries about huge crowds. Did you bring your DS?"
"Right here," I said as I showed it to him. "You?"
"Right here." He showed me his DS too.
"Same game from yesterday, right?" I asked.
"Yup. And more. Did you bring your other games?"
"Like always," I answered with a smile.
He chuckled and the rest of the walk was silent. Walking with Nino wasn't so awkward. I really felt like he was one of my friends back in America. "We're here," he announced and we stopped in front of a small cafe.
"Wow. When you said small, you weren't kidding." The cafe was like a mini Starbucks. Most of the tables were placed outside because there was no space inside.
"Ikou." Nino walked in first and then I followed him. We walked to the counter, there Nino asked, "Want anything?"
"Etto [Um]..." I read the menu almost fifty times, and then realized: Oh wait. I can't read kanji. "Gomen, I can't really read kanji." I admitted embarrassed.
"Daijoubu." Nino looked at the cashier and ordered two lattes.
"Arigatou," I thanked him nervously.
"Iie. Let's sit outside," he said and walked out of the cafe.
"Hai," I answered and followed him.
We sat down in a table near the enterance of the cafe. From where I sat I could see a lot of people walkin around with their friends or couples holding hands. Nino...he could see a tree. "Ready?" he asked.
"What are we playing first?"
"Mario Kart."
"Wakata." I opened my case and took out Mario Kart. My case was completely full of games. From action to RPG. From fantasy to history. I had it all.
"Uwa~" Nino said astonished. "Sugoi [Awesome]~"
"Nani [What]?" I asked confused. And thenI realized he was staring at my game collection. "Ah kore [this]? It's nothing really."
"How much do games cost in America?"
"New ones are $40. Old ones are about $20," I explained.
"Eh?" he replied confused.
"Ah, gomen. New games are about 4,000 yen. Old ones are 2,000 yen," rephrased.
"Eh? Takai [That's expensive]," he exclaimed.
"How much do games cost here?" I asked.
"Etto...I got Mario Kart for 3,000 yen. New."
"Eh~? I got Mario Kart for 5,000 yen. New."
"Uwa~ Takai, ne?"
"Takai."
"Shall we play?"
"Hai."
We started to play and I was dominating Nino. He kept falling, or misusing his items. I would always pass him in the first lap. But then he chose Rainbow Road. "My best stage," he bragged.
"Your best? How is that possible? Rainbow Road is the hardest, and you suck at the other ones. Even the easy ones," I told him harshly.
"I practice on Rainbow Road like it's my home," he explained.
"Eh~ Kowai [Scary]."
"Let's do this!"
"Hai!"
And so we played. It was a close race, but Nino won by just a centimeter. "Yatta [I did it]!" he shouted.
"Eh~? Uso [You're kidding]." I lowered my head and rested it on the table. "Mou ikai [One more time]," I begged looking at the standing Nino.
"Wakata." He sat down immediately and we started to play.
I was winning throughout the whole race. It was a really close race. Nino was second and I was first. But then it'd become the other way around. And then change back to me at first and him second. "I'm gonna win!" I said as my kart neared the finish line.
"No way!" Nino shouted in despair.
"Just a little more!" It was a straight road, so I didn't even have to look at the screen. Instead, I looked up and kept my finger pushing the A button. I looked around the town and realized I saw someone who looked familiar on the other side of the road. I squinted my eyes and looked harder. Ah! It's Jin. What's he doing here? Then a girl came out of the store he was standing in front of and she clung onto his arm. EH~!? Do yu koto [What's the meaning of this]? But then something even more shocking happened. The girl leaned closer to Jin and kissed him on the lips. EH~!!!!!???? Unconsiouly, I let go of the A button and my kart stopped. But I wasn't concentrated on that. I was too concentrated on Jin and the girl he was with.
"Yatta!" Nino shouted as he stood up. I gave no reaction and just stared at Jin and the girl. I completely ignored Nino. "Eh? Erika-chan? Doushita [What's wrong]?" I didn't answer him, nor did I look at him. He then followed my eyes and looked at what I was looking at. "Eh~?"
What. The. Hell. Is. Going. On?
